In-4° (mm 217x160). Pagine [12], 218, [2] bianche. Marca tipografica al frontespizio, capilettera e testatine xilografici. Strappetto al margine di p. 83-84 che interessa seppur minimamente il testo, qualche arrossatura sparsa. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena semifloscia con titoli manoscritti al dorso, mancante della carta di guardia anteriore. Note di possesso coperte con pecette cartacee al frontespizio.



Terza non comune edizione dell'opera maggiore di Cornelio, uno dei principali divulgatori della filosofia cartesiana nel Meridione. Memorie degli scrittori cosentini 161-165; Riccardi I, 374 con l'errata data del 1681; Thorndike VII, 662-663: «Tommaso Cornelio, a Cartesian of Cosenza, issued Progymnasmata physica at Venice in 1663, republished at Frankfurt in 1665, Venice, 1681 [ma 1683, N.d.R.], Leipzig, 1683, Jena, 1685, and with his complete works at Naples in 1688. He divided them into seven exercises which dealt respectively with 1) method, recommending the mathematical study of nature, and chemical and mechanical principles; 2) with the beginnings of natural phenomena where he found Cartesian explanation the best; 3) with the universe, "where", says the reviewer, "he seems to be in a maze"; 4) with the sun, holding that light is in the sentient, just as pain is in the wounded and not in the sword; 5) with human generation; 6) nutrication; and 7) life».
