Light browning on a few pages and a marginal tear on page 65, but a very beautiful copy with untrimmed edges on its cardboard, eighteenth-century binding. Spine partially detached on the first volume and a bit loose on the second.

Lievi bruniture a poche carte e uno strappo marginale a pagina 65 ma bellissima copia in barbe, nella sua legatura cartonata settecentesca. Dorso parzialmente staccato al primo volume e un po' allentato al secondo.

Very rare first edition of this famous monument of literature and law, the cornerstone of modern constitutionalism, published anonymously in Geneva in 1748. The work was greeted from the outset with an unprecedented success, as evidenced by the more than 20 counterfeit (or reprints, one could say) published in the successive two years. The copies of the first edition, as in the case of our copy, do not have the spelling error in the name of the publisher (Barillot written with an "r" less in counterfeit) and the leaf binded in the incorrect order, which instead appears in the first Parisian counterfeit of January 1749 - published with the address of Barrillot and undated. Cfr. PMM. 197:«In many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century [...]. It is an always original survey which is neither doctrinaire, visionary, eccentric, nor over-systematic».

Prima rarissima edizione di questa celeberrimo monumento della letteratura e del diritto, pietra miliare del costituzionalismo moderno, pubblicata anonima a Ginevra nel 1748. L'opera conobbe fin da subito un successo inaudito, come testimoniano le oltre 20 contraffazioni (o se si vuole, ristampe) edite nei successivi due anni. Le copie della prima edizione, come nel caso del nostro esemplare, non hanno l'errore di ortografia nel nome dell'editore (scritto Barillot con una "r" di meno nella contraffazione) e il foglio di errata legato in fine, che compaiono invece nella prima contraffazione parigina del gennaio 1749 - pubblicata con l'indirizzo di Barrillot e senza data.
