In-folio (mm 318x225). Pagine [2], XI, [1] bianca, 278, [2] con 3 carte di tavole calcografiche fuori testo rilegate in fine. Con ritratto dell'Autore all'antiporta. Bell'esemplare in carta forte e nelle sue barbe, con solo qualche minimo difetto: lievi occasionali macchie, qualche lieve brunitura a poche carte e strappetti al margine di 3 carte, che non ledono il testo. Legatura coeva in cartonato con titoli manoscritti al dorso, un po' allentata internamente.

Prima edizione di questa importante opera sulle malattie degli occhi, il primo testo di oftalmologia pubblicato in italiano. L'edizione è arricchita da un ritratto dell'Autore inciso da Faustino Anderloni su disegno di G. Cattaneo, e da 3 belle tavole incise da Anderloni su disegno dello stesso Scarpa; l'Autore stesso aveva formato questo incisore perché divenisse l'incisore delle sue illustrazioni (Choulant, 298); Heirs of Hippocrates 1106: «This classic work on ophthalmology remained the standard text for several decades, going through several editions and translations. It established Scarpa's reputation as a leading ophthalmologist and is especially notable for its copperplate engravings of the anatomy of the eye, drawn by the anatomist»; Norman Library 1899: «Scarpa's surgical treatise on the deseases of the eyes was the first textbook of ophthalmology published in italian. It contains the first description of the operation of iridodialysis, and significant chapters on cataract, staphyloma and diseases of the vessels in the eye.
