Pages [4] , VIII, LII , III, [1], 592 [i.e. 590] , 2 blank pages + 25 folding or double-page maps; [4] , IV, 725, [3] + 10 full-page plates; [4] , IV, 564, [4] + 5 plates; [4] , II, 520 [ i.e. 518] + 25 folding maps. In total, 65 copper plates with maps, views, and depictions of Chinese customs and religious rites. Title pages in red and black with engraved vignette, head-pieces engraved on copper and wood, woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemporary full leather binding with gilt titles on labels to the spines, covers with triple fillet frame in blind, gilded dentelles in squares, red speckled edges. Minor defects to the binding. Light foxing, stain in the upper external corner of the first 5 leaves of the first volume, and other minor defects, but exemplary copy in good condition and with plates mostly in excellent condition.

Con nel complesso 65 tavole incise in rame fuori testo, con mappe, vedute e raffigurazioni di costumi e riti religiosi cinesi. Frontespizi in inchiostro rosso e nero con vignetta calcografica, testatine incise sia in rame che in legno, capilettera e finalini xilografici. Legatura coeva in piena pelle maculata con titoli impressi in oro entro tasselli applicati ai dorsi a 6 nervi, cornice di triplice filetto impressa a freddo ai piatti, dentelles dorate alle unghiature, tagli spruzzati di rosso. Sbucciature ai piatti, alcune piccole mancanze alle cuffie e rotture alle cerniere. Bruniture ad alcune parti dei volumi, macchia nell'angolo superiore esterno delle prime 5 carte del primo volume, e altri trascurabili difetti ma esemplare in buono stato e con le carte di tavole perlopiù in splendide condizioni.

Original edition of this monumental encyclopedia compiled by Father Du Halde, in which he collect published and unpublished accounts of Jesuit missionaries. One of the most important and rare works about China; the text immediately was met with considerable success, so much so that a reprint followed a year later, and the book was soon translated into English, German, Dutch, and Russian... «Historically, this work must be regarded as monumental. Its strength lies in the vast amount and variety of interesting details, which must have given its readers an impression of the magnificence of the Chinese empire, and the wide range of achievements of the Chinese people in literature, science, philosophy and art» (Löwendahl L 0394). Of particular interest to his contemporaries were the beautiful copper engravings of Baquoy, d'Anville, Delahaye, Fonbonne, Guélard, Haussard, Le Parmentier, Maisonneuve and others, with a detailed and accurate map of the territory of China and many depictions of customs, drawn by Antoine Humblot. Among the previously unpublished texts published by Du Halde, there is Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beerings dans la Sibérie, with a map of the locations visited and an account of the first expedition of Bering to Alaska based on the original manuscript and map sent as a gift to the King of Poland by Bering himself. Edizione originale di questa monumentale enciclopedia compilata da padre Du Halde sulla base dei racconti editi e inediti dei missionari gesuiti, una delle più importanti e rare opere sulla Cina; il testo conobbe fin da subito un successo considerevole, tanto che seguirono una ristampa ad un anno di distanza e ben presto traduzioni in inglese, tedesco, olandese, russo... «Historically, this work must be regarded as monumental. Its strength lies in the vast amount and variety of interesting details, which must have given its readers an impression of the magnificence of the Chinese empire, and the wide range of achievements of the Chinese people in literature, science, philosophy and art» (Löwendahl L 0394). Di particolare interesse per i contemporanei erano le splendide incisioni in rame di Baquoy, d'Anville, Delahaye, Fonbonne, Guélard, Haussard, Le Parmentier, Maisonneuve e altri, con  una dettagliata e precisa cartografia del territorio cinese e molte raffigurazioni di usi e costumi locali, queste su disegni di Antoine Humblot. Fra i testi inediti pubblicati da Du Halde vi è la Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beerings dans la Sibérie, con una mappa dei luoghi attraversati, ossia il resoconto della prima spedizione di Bering in Alaska basato sul manoscritto originale e la mappa inviati in dono al re di Polonia dallo stesso Bering.
